Billie Eilish’s single is ‘an anthem about eating a girl out.’ And it was produced by her brother Finneas. And it’s pretty good…
The singer’s grimy, nu disco-infused queer pop banger isn’t backward in coming (lol) forward, revelling in its lustful innuendo (‘Baby, I think you were made for me/Somebody write down the recipe/Been tryin' hard not to overeat/You're just so sweet’). The brassy guitars also add to the good, sleazy fun while the zig-zagging synth breakdown towards echoes the disorienting excitement you can’t help but feel when you fall hard and fast for a new crush (or more specifically a ‘craving,’ as Eilish puts it).
The clip also strips right back as Eilish gets into full hypebeast mode, complete with basketball jersey and the backwards fuckboi cap. It looks pretty laidback, but it probably cost, like, thousands of dollars. But the distinctly 90s does actually work in perfect sync with the track’s overall cheeky nature. And after the lowkey and sometimes dour nature of Happier Than Ever, it’s good to see Eilish finally having fun and letting loose.
Says Eilish about the song (via Rolling Stone):
‘That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real,” Eilish says. “I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl, and then wrote the rest after. I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand — until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina. I was never planning on talking about my sexuality ever, in a million years. It’s really frustrating to me that it came up.’
